He is Director of Center for Biomedical Informatics and Professor of Internal Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine. Dr. Gurcan founded the Clinical Image Analysis Lab at The Ohio State University in 2005, and is currently its director. As PI and co-investigator of projects funded by the National Institutes of Health, American Cancer Society and Department of Defense and several foundations and research institutes, Dr. Gurcan has led multi-disciplinary teams in designing, developing, testing and validating various image analysis algorithms as part of computer-aided detection/diagnosis systems. Leveraging his background and experience in developing radiological image analysis systems, his group has been developing an algorithmic and computational infrastructure for processing and analyzing histopathological images of neuroblastoma and follicular lymphoma, as well as radiological images of osteoarthritis as motivating applications. Dr. Gurcan is the recipient of the British Foreign and Commonwealth Organization Award, NCI caBIG Embodying the Vision Award, Children’s Neuroblastoma Cancer Foundation Young Investigator Award, The OSU Cancer Center REAP Award, and is a senior of member of IEEE, SPIE and AMIA. He frequently lectures at different prominent conferences, and organizes several meetings related to image analysis.
